September Lawn Care in Myrtle Beach: Stop Large Patch & Armyworms

September is a very busy month for most folks. Kids are back in school; summer is nearing a close, and parents are readjusting their schedules. September is also a transition month for warm season turfgrass. It’s important to take a moment and check a couple of things in the lawn.

What you do in September has a HUGE impact on the following growing season.

Here are our two most important things to look for this year to ensure your lawn looks its best next year.

1.Large Patch

Large patch is commonly found in centipede, St. Augustine, and Zoysia Grass. Characterized by irregularly round brown or straw-colored patched in the lawn. A common misconception is that cooler weather means that fungal levels are lower when in fact late summer and early fall carry some of the highest risk of fungal damage. Hot temperatures accompanied with high moisture rates create the perfect environment.

Watch for irregular, round, and straw-colored patches. If you believe that your lawn is showing signs of Large Patch, a double treatment of fungicide is recommended.

Armyworms can destroy a beautiful yard almost instantly.

These caterpillar-like worms can defoliate a lawn very quickly, leaving behind damaged areas. In some cases they can wipe out the entire property. Army worms are most active in the late months of the summer and into the early fall.

Coen Lawn’s treatment programs provide several preventive applications during the year to help prevent armyworms. Depending on rainfall and temperatures, it is always wise to check for signs in order to catch them early before they destroy your lawn. If you see these little guys crawling around on blades of grass, a double rate of a quality insecticide will go a long way to saving the lawn. Make sure that you choose one that says it is water activated, that means the active ingredient will not be effective until the product is thoroughly watered into the lawn.
